The Mark Tradition: Now You See It, Now You Don't

Retreat Description: Mark's gospel is quite a challenge to its reader/believer. The very first verse declares: "Here begins the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." The reader is the outside looking in and observing that the disciples and apostles see something but don't get it. The only one who does is Satan, but since he will 'pervert' that knowledge he is told bluntly to 'shut up'. This gospel is like a diptych. The first panel searches for Jesus' identity, the second one for the meaning and implications of that identity. This workshop reflects on details that guide the disciples (and the reader as well) to reach a full understanding, which in Mark they seem not to achieve. We may learn from them and not be too quick in claiming that we know who Jesus is.
Presenter: Tony Verhallen is a retired high school teacher. He earned his MA in Theology from St. Mary's College, Moraga, CA, and his MA in History from California State University, Long Beach, CA. He taught Scripture, Ethics, and Church History at Pius X High School in Downey, St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, and Servite High School in Anaheim. He volunteers for the Western Service Workers Association, an organization that assists low income families and weekly conducts discussions and reflections on the Scriptures at St. Boniface parish in Anaheim.
